71-year-old U.S. Air Force Veteran William Shutterworth is on a 7-month walk across America from Massachusetts to California, for his campagin “Vets Don’t Forget Vets”
Along the way, he will meet, share, and talk to any vet he can individually, in small groups at VA Centers, in American Legions, VFWs, coffee shops and across dining room tables.
He will be in Columbus around Father's Day weekend. Here is his plan:
(Starting now) Pennsylvania > Ohio > Indiana > Illinois
In Ohio, look for the connecting roads to Rt 62 to Youngstown to Boardman to Salem, Ohio to Canton to Millersburg, Ohio, down to Danville to New Albany into Columbus to see my niece Heidi for a day of rest.
From Columbus, take Rt 161 to Rt 36 to Plain City, to Urbana, to Covington, then to Greenville, Ohio, to Palestine, the last town I will visit in Ohio.
Staying on Rt 36 to Pendleton, Indiana. In Pendeleton, take Rt 38 to Noblesville, then Rt 32 to Lebanon and then onto Crawsfordville , IN, Find Rt 136 to Danville, Illinois. Danville, IL to Champaign, IL on Rt 150. Take Rt 10 to Lincoln, Illinois, to small town of Havana, IL. Rt 24 to Rushville to Rt 5 to 61 to Quincy, IL.
Ohio > Indiana > Illinois > Missouri > Kansas > Colorado
Find Route 16 to to Rt 6, to Kirksville, MO to Trenton to Jamesport, MO into St. Joseph, MO. Enter Kansas on Rt 36 to Hiawatha, KS on Rt 13. Continue on Kansas to Rt 36, all the way to Marysville to Phillipsburg to Norton, to Oberlin and to Bird City (population 437). Now entering Colorado.
Welcome to Colorado, Mountain Time, take Rt 36 to Cope, to Last Chance, Co, and then Rt 71 to Limon, to Colorado Springs on Rt 24. Buena Vista, Co to Rt 82 to Glenwood Springs. Glenwood Springs to Grand Junction.
Colorado > Utah > Nevada > California
Find the best way into Utah, on Rt 50 the ‘loneliest’ stretch of highway in the continental United States. Take Rt 50 to Salina, to Delta, staying on Rt 50 into Neveda and go to Great Basin National Park.
From Great Basin, take Rt 6 to Rt 93 to Ely Route 6 to Tonopah. Take Rt 6 into CA, to Benton. In Benton go to Bishop, into or on the outskirts of Inyoken to 178 to Bakersfield to Rt 58 to Maricopa to Rt 166 to Santa Maria to Rt 1 to Lompoc, Vandenberg AFB and I have arrived to my destination. One happy, lucky guy.
William's Statement:
Veterans gave a lot and often have little to show for it. More than 25% of all homeless men are veterans, and many of these forgotten warriors struggle with employment, addiction and sobriety. These men and women have little voice in Congress. Today, less than 18% of Congress has served in the military, compared to 78% in 1972.
With fewer veterans in Washington, who will speak and advocate for them? We need change.
